Safeguard your investment. Your new floor starts out bright and will stay that way provided you give it the attention it deserves.

  • Daily Care

Light daily dusting or vacuuming will help keep your floor bright, as it removes dust and grit which can lessen its shine.
  • Wet Cleaning

When your floor receives hard use or becomes soiled, wet cleaning is necessary. A mild solution such as synthetic liquid dish detergent or preferably floor cleaner is recommended. Apply the solution (follow label directions) to the floor with a sponge mop.

After the soil has loosened from the floor, mop up the excess suds and water. Rinse the mop and bucket thoroughly with clean water. Use the sponge mop frequently rung out to remove rinse water. Allow to dry before using vinyl dressing.

  • Recommended Cleaners

In those instances where stubborn, hard-to-remove soiled areas resist removal by soaking with detergent, Soft Scrub polishing cleanser or a similar product only (nonabrasive cleanser) is acceptable for this purpose. Soft Scrub can also be used to remove scuff marks or surface stains. High-gloss floors should never be cleaned with steel wool or abrasive cleaners.

Rinse cleaners, abrasive cleaners, cleaners containing solvents and steel wool are not recommended as their use can dull your floor. Never allow cleaning solutions to remain on your floor for long periods of time. Never use diluted chlorine bleach on your floor.

Although you can't avoid having to replace your draperies eventually, you can postpone their demise. To help you do just that, here's a rundown on drapery enemies to watch out for:

  • Direct Sun

Strong, direct sunlight will weaken most fibers. To a lesser extent, indirect sun can be damaging, too. Lined draperies will naturally resist damage from the sun better than unlined draperies.

Just be sure the quality of your lining fabric matches that of your drapery material. It's poor economy to line quality fabric with an inexpensive fabric that will deteriorate more rapidly than the draperies themselves.

  • Humidity

Excess humidity and sudden changes in humidity level can shrink or stretch loosely woven fabrics. Both your lined and unlined draperies will maintain their shape and their looks better if you keep the humidity level in your home fairly constant.
  • Water

Rainwater or condensation on windows can cause unsightly watermarks on drapery fabric. Sometimes these stains are unnoticeable until the draperies have been cleaned, and then the marks are practically impossible to remove without telltale traces.

The first and most obvious way to protect your draperies from water damage is to close your windows against the elements. Another is to hang your draperies properly so they won't touch the glass. Watch out for drafts and blasts from climate controllers that blow your draperies against the window.

Thank you for your help and patience while I chose my carpet. As you know, it's difficult to make decisions without tile and wall colors. It all went fine. The tenants were thrilled, and they loved the surprise! —Christina McCann
